Day 133

Affirmation:

I envision my tomorrows as wonderful, blessed experiences that I look forward to.

I build my tomorrows on a foundation of hopeful, eager and joyful anticipation.

I live in today but am ever excited about tomorrow.

What has yet to be, shall be good, plentiful and easily experienced.

I know that tomorrow will be a great day.

Our tomorrows are created in our consciousness today.   There are as many recipes for creating a better tomorrow as there are words to express the process, but a good place to begin is by finding what our personal default setting is…  Stop for a moment and ask yourself, “How do I envision my tomorrows?”   Do you consider the future as a chore?  Bleak?  Boring? More of the same?  Or is tomorrow an eagerly anticipated cache of miracles and treasured moments to come?   Do you see unexplored opportunities waiting to unfold?  Love lying in wait?  Aging, health issues and loneliness?

Our underlying beliefs and attitudes about tomorrow create the blue print for what will manifest.  If thinking about your future feels uninspiring, worrisome or exhausting, change it before it manifests.  To change the future, we need to shift our thoughts and feelings so that the tomorrow in our mind is what we wish it to be and look forward to arriving.

Day 132

Affirmation:

I follow my dreams, hopes, ideas, goals, inner urgings and aspirations.

No matter what is in my way, I am unstoppable.

I am a self-starter.

I have initiative.

I am motivated.

I make things happen.

I am known for getting things done.

I believe that all things are possible.

I am grateful for a Universe that is always conspiring to help me.

We’ve all had dreams we’ve never pursued.  Goals that have never been fulfilled.  Ideas that have never been manifested.  Feelings that have never been shared.  We can’t allow resistant or negative thoughts to stop us and we need to stop making excuses for our own lack of initiative.  Money, time and contacts are not enough to stop us once we make up our minds to do something.  It’s not always possible to transform the thoughts that seek to hold us back so we have to press on in spite of them.   Sometimes it isn’t about not being afraid; it’s about being afraid and doing it anyway…..

Day 128

Affirmation:

I am grateful for limitless possibilities.

I am grateful for opportunities to have all that is positive in my life.

I am blessed with a beautifully abundant and balanced life.

I have wealth and I am grateful.

I have a fulfilling purpose and I am grateful.

I have inner peace and I am grateful.

I have healthy relationships and I am grateful.

I have a healthy body and I am grateful.

I have a soul satisfying spiritual life and I am grateful.

I enjoy life’s pleasures and I am grateful.

Financial wealth, fulfilling purpose/work, inner peace, healthy relationships, physical health, connection to self and spirit, and time for fun and relaxation… These are seven fundamental components of an abundant and balanced life.   If asked, many people would likely say that at least one of these areas in their lives has been sacrificed for another.  Perhaps work that creates wealth has caused relationships to be shortchanged.  Or maybe a deeply spiritual life has been created at the expense of wealth.

So why do we give up one thing in order to have another?  Why don’t we strive to have it all?  Sadly, many of us – usually unconsciously – do not believe we’re worthy of “having it all” and without the belief in our worthiness we never will.  A good many more do not consciously believe it’s possible.  It’s an all too common misconception that only through sacrifice can we achieve our goals.  Of course if that were true no one would “have it all” and many do.  Remember, if but ONE PERSON can achieve something, then so can anyone, even you and I.  Still others feel selfish or self-centered just thinking about wanting to “have it all.”  Those are limiting beliefs planted in us by others and they need to be uprooted. No one needs to settle for three out of seven when seven of seven is possible,  and everyone has the same potential for that perfect seven.

Having It All

Day 118

Affirmation:

I am a light in the world.

I am a beacon for someone.

I presence in life is infinitely important.

I do not exist so that I can matter, I matter because I exist.

None of us ever truly know the impact we make on the world and others while we’re in it.   We may feel like bit players in a big production, someone whose part could be filled by just about anyone.  We’re wrong.  We may feel like we’ve never made a difference in the world.  We have.  Often we don’t know how far our light has shone or whose path we’ve illuminated.  We tend to need to see the product of our efforts before we will believe we’ve created a result.    And most of the time we never know who we’ve helped.  Most of the time, we don’t know how important we are in the world.

You have no way of knowing that the fight you broke up on the playground kept one little kid from turning into a bully.   You don’t realize that the girl you talked to at the doctor’s office left her abusive boyfriend because of something you said.  You’ll never see that the old man you helped yesterday has a new lease on life today because he again believes that people are good.  You don’t know how the dominoes of your good deeds and kind acts have fallen.  What matters is that each of us believe that we make a difference just by being here, that – in more small ways than big –  we matter.  That we are – each and every one of us – a light in the world for someone to travel by.

Day 112

Affirmation:

I am courageous.

I have a fearless heart.

I am courageous in love; I have a fearless heart.

I am courageous in life; I have a fearless heart.

I am courageous and I have a fearless heart.

Fear is an important part of the animal within us.  Fear is the necessary primal alert to a possible threat.  Without fear, early man would have likely never survived as a species.  We still need fear to alert us to threats, but instead of relying on fear to protect us solely from physical danger, we have adapted this response to every situation in our lives that might feel threatening, and in the modern world most of our threats are emotional.  We fear losing our selves to another, we fear losing our independence, we fear being controlled, we fear being hurt, we fear being abandoned, we fear being betrayed, we fear being happy, we fear change.  Many amazing and beautiful relationships have been missed out on or come to a sorry end because of fear.  By embracing our emotional fears and understanding how they attempt to protect us – with tactics like avoidance, defensiveness, detachment and aggression – we can begin to relinquish or move beyond them.  In fear our hearts never know the fullness of love and that is the great irony because our greatest fear is of being unloved but it is the fear itself that makes it so.  It takes daring and courage but only when our hearts are fearless are we truly open to loving and being loved.

Day 101

Affirmation:

I believe in miracles.

I believe anything and everything is possible.

Albert Einstein famously said, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”   The latter places life on a much more vibrant and impressive palette.   What constitutes a miracle is up to the witness and the key is belief.  We can not see what we do not believe in.  Being open to the belief that the miraculous is all around us allows our hearts to recognize and see miracles everywhere.  An unfettered belief in miracles opens doors to every imaginable possibility, inspires awe and gratitude, and adds magic and mystery to a sometimes all too mundane world.

Day 98

Affirmation:

My dreams are as big and as infinite as my imagination.

I believe in my dreams and their fulfillment.

I let no one and no thing hinder my dream potential.

Why do we settle for dreaming small when dreaming big is just as possible?  Because we tend to minimize our own potential, we often minimize our dreams, hopes and ambitions.  There is no limit to human potential, only that which we ourselves place on it.  Men soar in the sky like birds because someone dared to dream that big dream.  Humans have navigated beyond the scope of our planet because someone dreamed that big dream.  Organs can be replaced, regenerated and even grown all because first someone dreamed those big dreams.  Every thought we have creates something so why not go for something grand? Don’t settle for dreaming small.  Dream BIG and bold and all the way and let no one tell you that you can’t.

Day 89

Affirmation:

I keep my focus in the direction of my desires.

If we desire abundance but keep seeing lack everywhere we look, we need to turn and look in a different direction.  If we desire health but our attention is only on ailing, we must change our point of view.  We cannot experience, achieve, or manifest a desire if we’re looking in the direction of what we do not want.  And since we can only see in the direction we face, we must be facing that which we desire.  If we desire harmony, we must look in the direction of harmony rather than staring at discord.  If we wish to have a life we are grateful for, we must be seeing that which we are grateful for.  If we do not like what we’re seeing, we must change our position.

Day 70

Affirmation:

Today I will see God in the details.

If we want to know Divinity, all we have to do is look around.  In every particle of light filtering thru the window we can know the Absolute’s illumination. In every newly revealed green leaf & blossom, we can see the Divine’s celebration of life. In every bird song of joy, every child’s cry of need, and every lover’s sigh of passion, we can hear voice of the Infinite Spirit. In this morning’s hot coffee and tonight’s cool sheets, in a stranger’s smile and an old friend’s embrace, in the rhythm of our breath and the beating of our hearts, in all the little details we can experience the Source of all existence as it appears in ordinary life and experiences.

Day 69

Affirmation:

I let go my resistance to life’s natural rhythms and allow myself to be carried through change and growth.

I surrender my need to control every outcome and circumstance and allow life to unfold naturally.

I  surrender to faith.

I live with trust.

I let go.

Surrendering is not giving in or giving up, it is letting life unfold in its mysterious unbridled way, accepting that some things simply can’t be controlled.  When we surrender to life, we let go of our resistance – which pushes against the natural flow of things – and allow ourselves to become a part of the harmonious rhythm of the universe.  When we surrender, we throw our oars in the river and let the current carry us, acknowledging that sometimes we truly do not know what is best, but having faith that something greater than us does.  Surrendering is accepting the unacceptable, when there is no other choice.  Surrendering is accepting the inevitable as part of life’s journey, even if we don’t really want to.  Observe a leaf floating downstream, a hawk gliding on an air current, or a child going down a slide, and you are observing surrender.  Let’s know when to be the leaf, the hawk, the child, and let life carry us for a while.

Day 68

Affirmation:

My faith guides me when I’m uncertain.

My faith carries me when I am lost.

My faith helps me fulfill my dreams.

My faith is strong and solid.

My faith is sure.

Faith is the born of the union of hope and belief… Hope without belief is infertile.  Belief without hope is impotent.  But with both – a belief in possibilities and hope in their manifestation or truth – we cultivate FAITH.  And from faith flow inner peace and the flowering of potential.  Faith reminds us that there are paths being laid in front of us that we can’t yet see.  Faith assures us that there is always a silver lining waiting to be known.  True faith doesn’t just show up on sunny days, it is strong enough to weather all storms.   True faith doesn’t crumble like sand the moment the burden is too heavy, it bears the weight of our burdens like granite.

Day 67

Affirmation:

I believe in my dreams.

I expect my dreams to become my reality.

Every day I move confidently toward the realization of my dreams.

Every day I do something that supports the fulfillment of my dreams.

Consider the dreams you have for yourself.  Now ask yourself if you honestly believe in their coming true.  Do you expect them to become reality, or not-so-much?  Do you take action that supports the fulfillment of your dreams or are your actions counter-productive?   Too often our dreams sit idle – placed high upon the shelves of our imaginations only to be looked at and sighed over wistfully from time to time but never touched.  Dreams don’t just manifest themselves into reality without those two magic ingredients – belief and action.  Our beliefs create an opening that allows our dreams to come to us.  Our actions create the energy vortex that draws them into our experience.  Dreams need our help to come true and today is a good time to start moving confidently toward their realization.

Day 66

Affirmation:

If I never got lost, I’d never learn to find my way.

I accept the mystery of not-knowing.

I am grateful for all aspects of my journey.

Every day is a winding road that we’re traveling for the first time.  Some days we feel like seasoned navigators, others more like orphans dropped from the stars.   Our displaced orphan days are often the hardest to journey through.  Imagine being placed in a car, in the middle of a foreign landscape, with no knowledge of where you are, and being told to drive to a city called Point B.  Not knowing where we are in life can feel much the same, but those are the days of *growth* and *expansion*.   Those are the times we have opportunities to cultivate faith, build inner strength and surrender to the mystery.  And it doesn’t matter if we get lost, because it isn’t about the destination,  it’s what we learn along the way.

Day 62

Affirmation:

I accept that all life is in a constant state of flux.

I accept impermanence as an inherent part of living in the natural world.

I do not cling to life, people, things or experiences.

I understand that everything is impermanent and eventually gives way to something else.

I deeply appreciate my life and its holdings while they are present, knowing they can change or cease to be at any time.

A core tenet of Buddhist philosophy is that humans suffer when they cling to that which is impermanent.   The Buddha taught that liberation from suffering can be found by living in a state of non-attachment, which is realized when impermanence is understood to the true nature of the phenomenal world.  Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike can benefit from this simple understanding.  Impermanence tells us that all things of the world are in a constant state of change and that anything that originates is subject to cessation.  Impermanence is easily understood when thinking in terms of death and decay, but circumstance and choice can also create endings.  I once witnessed a young mother become inconsolable when her toddler broke a glass bird she’d had since childhood.  The child was punished and made to suffer for his age-appropriate accident.  She cried for hours, and talked about the incident for weeks.  Everyone around her suffered for the loss of this little object.  The incident was extreme but a beautiful example of how we cling to objects.  We also cling – or attach ourselves – to situations, jobs, events, lifestyles, such that when they change or end, suffering ensues.  Perhaps the form of attachment that creates the most suffering is our attachment to each other.  Relationships are wrought with attachment.  Parents cling to children who must grow up and move on, and many a divorce lawyer has filled his coffer when one spouse clings to another who seeks change.  But when we embrace impermanence we understand that life has cycles, that relationships may end, and that items break or are lost.   Non-attachment does not mean de-tachment.  It means appreciating the thing, person and experience in the moment, with an acceptance of the reality that the only certainty is change.  Accepting impermanence has the ability to instill a deep and meaningful reverence for what exists now, a true presence in life’s moments and promote a greater passion for living life fully.  Just as the tree sheds its leaves seasonally and the caterpillar becomes the butterfly, so too are we and our lives a part of the natural reality of impermanence.

Day 61

Affirmation:

I value life as a precious gift.

I live the moments of my life fully.

I am grateful for every next moment of life I am given.

Life is a precious gift that comes to us in moments and other brief and intangible snippets of time.  None of us knows how many tomorrows we’ll have, all we can do is cherish those that arrive.   Holding life as a sacred experience – too sacrosanct to waste on the trivial and trite, the fleeting and the impermanent – is truly honouring the gift we are given – one brief, flickering, extinguishable moment at a time.  By cherishing the precious gift of life that is ours, we honour those who are given fewer heartbeats than us.

Day 60

Affirmation:

I rise above opportunities to express fear and anger.

I choose to respond to life with and from love.

I choose to be better than the examples others set.

I grow and evolve with life’s experiences.

I am my own hero.

One of life’s great lessons is to rise above and be better for our circumstances and trials.  We learn, grow and evolve when we take every experience – not just the good ones – and become better and more loving for them.  It can be easy to repeat the bad choices and behaviour others have modeled for us but the desirable way is to be better than those examples and to let them inspire us to greatness.  The easy path is to react to life’s difficulties with negative resistance; the desirable way is to respond to challenges with hope, faith, courage and optimism.  Some of our greatest heroes are those we see as having overcome formidable circumstances in order to rise to their highest potential.   We can all be our own heroes and heroines, being better – always better – for what life offers us.

Day 54

Affirmation:

I live true to myself.

I listen openly to the ideas of others but decide for myself.

I live my own original life.

Sometimes we fall like blind sheep over the ledge and into the pit of cultural should’s and shouldn’ts, acceptables and unacceptables, such that what others think becomes a genuinely unconscious factor in our decision making. Whether it’s about which music is cool to listen to or which clothes are in style, or something vastly more important like which path to follow or who to love, we must be consciously aware of what influences play into our choices and decisions.  Living authentically means living true to one’s own beliefs, opinions and ideas, even if that means being unsupported.

"being true to yourself"

Day 53

Affirmation:

I am stronger than I appear to be.

I am stronger than I think I am.

I am not yet as strong as I will be.

We may be physically small, weak, or feel challenged by our body, age, or intellect, but no matter what the perceived limitation, we are ALL stronger than we appear to be, and undeniably stronger than we think we are.   The strength I’m referring to  is inner strength, what we think of as courage, determination, fortitude, grace and integrity.   This inner strength has carried each of us through life’s storms.   It has given us the will to get out of bed when we all we want to do is hide under the covers.   Our strength allows us to stand up for others without a second thought.  It nudges us gently into relationships that are so good they scare us, and forcefully walks us away from those so bad they wound us.    Our inner strength allows us to face our fears, go for our goals, recover from pain, and express ourselves authentically.

Think of a time when you were sure you could not take another step in life,  a time when hope was nothing more than another 4-letter word.    Something propelled you out of the abyss.  What was it?  It wasn’t  the friend, book or doctor.  It was you.   Before anything external can help us move from misery to recovery, we must first reach the point of wanting better for ourselves and creating that space where better can be seeded.  And  it is inner strength that births that desire for better, allowing us to find or accept help.   Our strength never leaves us, no matter what happens to our bodies or our situations.  Not only is it a permanent part of our beings, it grows with each trial.   It reminds us that we’ve overcome before and will again.  It says, “If I could go through that, I can get through anything.”

Day 52

Affirmation:

I am flexible in my journey, how it unfolds and where it leads.

I am open to seeing new doors as they appear in front of me, walking through them if invited.

I let go my rigid expectations and create an open space of willingness to accept and receive the unexpected gifts of the Universe.

I allow my fixed dreams and desires to become malleable.

We all know someone who has stopped struggling toward a goal or desire, only to then achieve it.  Or let go of a dream, certain it would never be realized, only to then know something better or even more fulfilling.  Imagine how many people have missed out on great relationships, jobs, and experiences because those presented them didn’t match their criteria.  Life rarely offers the straight and well paved road to where we wish to be.  More often it’s filled with unexpected twists and turns, and blind corners that keep us guessing.  If we are willing to be flexible and open to the unknown, if we are willing to trust that there is a universal force at work in our lives that knows even better than we do how to reach our desired happiness, and if we surrender our small will to that force, miracles will happen. When we create a space of openness in our hearts and minds for the unknown and are willing to step forward and say YES to it, we make ourselves and our lives available for all that is beautiful, fulfilling and joy-full.

Day 51

Affirmation:

I choose a positive perspective no matter what my situation is.

If we see ourselves as victims of this world we cannot feel grateful for all that is right in our lives . If our focus is on what we perceive as lacking, we can not see all that we have. But when we come at life from the other side, seeing what we love and want and cherish and appreciate and learn from, we no longer see what we don’t want, don’t like, and don’t feel good about.  When our focus is on what is uplifting, we don’t see what brings us down.  When our hearts are feeling grateful for the plenty we do have, we aren’t giving attention to what we think is missing.   While in the midst of positive, limitless, hopeful thoughts, we are not having negative, limiting and doubting thoughts.  Having and maintaining a positive perspective changes everything because it changes everything.
