Day 132

Affirmation:

I follow my dreams, hopes, ideas, goals, inner urgings and aspirations.

No matter what is in my way, I am unstoppable.

I am a self-starter.

I have initiative.

I am motivated.

I make things happen.

I am known for getting things done.

I believe that all things are possible.

I am grateful for a Universe that is always conspiring to help me.

We’ve all had dreams we’ve never pursued.  Goals that have never been fulfilled.  Ideas that have never been manifested.  Feelings that have never been shared.  We can’t allow resistant or negative thoughts to stop us and we need to stop making excuses for our own lack of initiative.  Money, time and contacts are not enough to stop us once we make up our minds to do something.  It’s not always possible to transform the thoughts that seek to hold us back so we have to press on in spite of them.   Sometimes it isn’t about not being afraid; it’s about being afraid and doing it anyway…..

Day 128

Affirmation:

I am grateful for limitless possibilities.

I am grateful for opportunities to have all that is positive in my life.

I am blessed with a beautifully abundant and balanced life.

I have wealth and I am grateful.

I have a fulfilling purpose and I am grateful.

I have inner peace and I am grateful.

I have healthy relationships and I am grateful.

I have a healthy body and I am grateful.

I have a soul satisfying spiritual life and I am grateful.

I enjoy life’s pleasures and I am grateful.

Financial wealth, fulfilling purpose/work, inner peace, healthy relationships, physical health, connection to self and spirit, and time for fun and relaxation… These are seven fundamental components of an abundant and balanced life.   If asked, many people would likely say that at least one of these areas in their lives has been sacrificed for another.  Perhaps work that creates wealth has caused relationships to be shortchanged.  Or maybe a deeply spiritual life has been created at the expense of wealth.

So why do we give up one thing in order to have another?  Why don’t we strive to have it all?  Sadly, many of us – usually unconsciously – do not believe we’re worthy of “having it all” and without the belief in our worthiness we never will.  A good many more do not consciously believe it’s possible.  It’s an all too common misconception that only through sacrifice can we achieve our goals.  Of course if that were true no one would “have it all” and many do.  Remember, if but ONE PERSON can achieve something, then so can anyone, even you and I.  Still others feel selfish or self-centered just thinking about wanting to “have it all.”  Those are limiting beliefs planted in us by others and they need to be uprooted. No one needs to settle for three out of seven when seven of seven is possible,  and everyone has the same potential for that perfect seven.

Day 125

Affirmation:

I celebrate life.

I celebrate the miracles, joys, successes, bounty, imperfection, health, love, triumph, growth, prosperity, support, opportunities and Presence, in my life.

I celebrate the big reveals in the small details.

I celebrate living.

Life is not always easy but it always holds something to cherish, to honour and to celebrate.  It may be storming but outside birds still sing.   Find a reason to celebrate.  Look around the world and see the goodness, the glory and the greatness!  Look in the mirror and see the smile, the wisdom and the potential!    Rejoice in the monumental small details, the clean water, the gentle hug, the bee that dances from flower to flower.   Celebrate good times, past, present, and future.   Celebrate the Divine and Sacred gift of existence!   Find a reason, any or none at all, but CELEBRATE!

And if my passionate words aren’t enough…. listen and just try not to dance!  Celebrate!

Day 124

Affirmation:

Today I will make time to experience the wonders of the physical world.

I will deliberately pay attention to the wonders all around me.

I will look,

I will SEE,

and I will be in AWE.

In the United States the interstate highway maximum design speed in rural areas is 75 mph.   Speeds on a single-track country road in the United Kingdom can be as high as 60 mph (97 km/h).   On Italy’s Autostrade, speeds can reach 150 km/h.   Bicyclists average 12-22 mph.  Joggers average 4-7 mph.  Even the average walking speed is 3.1 miles per hour.  How much do we actually see at any of those speeds?  Consider all the wonders that are missed because we are moving too fast to see that odd little bug toodling across the pavement, or the rabbit scurrying under the bushes, or the water droplet precariously perched for its descent on the edge of a blade of grass?  As children we didn’t just look at nature, we SAW it, but as adults we have places to go and things to do and speeds to keep, much to our detriment.  Seeing the wonder of nature keeps us humble, connected and centered in the mystery.  Take time to go out in the world for the sole purpose of witnessing the wonder.  Don’t just walk, kneel, reach and SEE.  If you don’t remember how, take a child along and follow their lead!

Day 119

Affirmation:

I am here in this moment and I feel safe.

I am here in this moment and I feel secure.

I am here in this moment and I feel at ease.

I am here in this moment and I am safe.

I am here in this moment and I am secure.

I am here in this moment and I am at ease.

Fear always arises in the present moment but is never about circumstances that exist in the present moment. The present circumstances are nothing more than triggers or precipitating factors for fear.  Fear is the result of anticipatory thoughts of a future, yet-to-happen experience.

We can consider any fear – from a fear of flying to a fear of abandonment – and in each instance the fear is the result of a thought of what could happen in a future time.  Once a fear is realized it disappears or is replaced by a new fear. Fear is always moving forward into the next possible point in time and the experience that may arise. For instance, a person who is afraid of walking alone at night is actually afraid of what may happen to them while walking, such as being robbed.  But should they find themselves being robbed, the fear of being robbed will be replaced by a new fear, perhaps of being injured.  And if injured, the fear of being injured will be replaced by a new fear of another as yet realized experience.

So what does all this mean?  It means that we can overcome our fears when we recognize that fear is an anticipatory response that can only exist outside the present moment.  This awareness means that we can live outside of fear when we understand and accept that even while in the midst of our most feared experience we would not be afraid of that current experience.  We cannot avoid the inevitable experiences that cause us anxiety and distress, but we can work toward eliminating the fear we create and experience as the result of living in a future yet-to-be by holding ourselves in a present moment mindset – a place where fear does not exist.

Day 118

Affirmation:

I am a light in the world.

I am a beacon for someone.

I presence in life is infinitely important.

I do not exist so that I can matter, I matter because I exist.

None of us ever truly know the impact we make on the world and others while we’re in it.   We may feel like bit players in a big production, someone whose part could be filled by just about anyone.  We’re wrong.  We may feel like we’ve never made a difference in the world.  We have.  Often we don’t know how far our light has shone or whose path we’ve illuminated.  We tend to need to see the product of our efforts before we will believe we’ve created a result.    And most of the time we never know who we’ve helped.  Most of the time, we don’t know how important we are in the world.

You have no way of knowing that the fight you broke up on the playground kept one little kid from turning into a bully.   You don’t realize that the girl you talked to at the doctor’s office left her abusive boyfriend because of something you said.  You’ll never see that the old man you helped yesterday has a new lease on life today because he again believes that people are good.  You don’t know how the dominoes of your good deeds and kind acts have fallen.  What matters is that each of us believe that we make a difference just by being here, that – in more small ways than big –  we matter.  That we are – each and every one of us – a light in the world for someone to travel by.

Day 117

Affirmation:

My spiritual path is my own and of my own choosing.

Wherever I am is where I am meant to be.

I am open to changing directions if it will bring me closer to my authentic nature.

The journey of inner spiritual growth is a distinctly personal one.  There is no one right way.  What works for one may not work for another.  Even individually, a path that has been helpful for a time may start to feel constrictive and ill-fitting, and need to be abandoned.  Just as we outgrow clothes and need new ones, sometimes we must seek a new path, one that allows for continued expansion.  Many of us are seekers whose spiritual weight goes up and down like a yo-yo requiring frequent navigational shifts.  While some have a certain discipline and fidelity that allows them to stay with the same practice for their entire lives, many of us are of the clothes-changing type.  Both can be equally beneficial and it is crucial to honor one’s uniquely individual needs and allow oneself the freedom to change course if change is beneficial.

Day 112

Affirmation:

I am courageous.

I have a fearless heart.

I am courageous in love; I have a fearless heart.

I am courageous in life; I have a fearless heart.

I am courageous and I have a fearless heart.

Fear is an important part of the animal within us.  Fear is the necessary primal alert to a possible threat.  Without fear, early man would have likely never survived as a species.  We still need fear to alert us to threats, but instead of relying on fear to protect us solely from physical danger, we have adapted this response to every situation in our lives that might feel threatening, and in the modern world most of our threats are emotional.  We fear losing our selves to another, we fear losing our independence, we fear being controlled, we fear being hurt, we fear being abandoned, we fear being betrayed, we fear being happy, we fear change.  Many amazing and beautiful relationships have been missed out on or come to a sorry end because of fear.  By embracing our emotional fears and understanding how they attempt to protect us – with tactics like avoidance, defensiveness, detachment and aggression – we can begin to relinquish or move beyond them.  In fear our hearts never know the fullness of love and that is the great irony because our greatest fear is of being unloved but it is the fear itself that makes it so.  It takes daring and courage but only when our hearts are fearless are we truly open to loving and being loved.

Day 111

Affirmation:

I seek balance in my life.

I temper do-ing with be-ing.

I face my challenges head on.

I seek resolutions in relationship matters.

Being busy is a sometimes necessary part of living.  The art of busy-ness is an avoidance technique.  By keeping ourselves buried in work, errands, to-do lists, meetings, chores, and appointments, we conveniently avoid dealing with something in our lives that needs facing.  When couples in relationship begin having troubles, it’s sadly common for one or both to immerse themselves in busy-ness in order to avoid dealing with their problems.  Over time, those same two who once shared a balanced life will find themselves continually busied in their now very separate lives.  Individuals who are frightened by an inner need for change or don’t want to face a painful issue, will often throw themselves into busy-ness.  When we find ourselves always on the go, with never enough time, without social interaction or relationship connection, or with too much on our plates, it’s probably a good idea to stop and ask ourselves if we’re just very busy or using busy-ness as a way of avoiding something that should have our attention.

The Simple Moments

Day 110

Affirmation:

I savor the ordinary moments of my life.

I am present in the simple experiences of life.

I appreciate the seemingly unremarkable moments of my life.

Births, deaths, marriages, moves, job changes, losses, successes, firsts and lasts…. these are usually how we remember and mark our lives, yet we have far more simple everyday moments than major life experiences.  In fact, most of life is lived in simple moments.  It is in the small moments that we experience a child’s spontaneous hug, a stranger’s unexpected kindness and a puppy’s wet kiss.  It is in the small moments that we observe a rainbow, a shooting star and a hummingbird darting by.  It is in the small moments that we steal a glance at our beloved to find them doing the same and observe our precious babies sleeping.   Moments, like events, need to be savored, cherished and recorded in our mind’s archives.  We need to pause during those ordinary moments to appreciate what life is offering us.  We need to slow down so that we can fully experience them.   And always, we need to remember that it is the moments themselves that are the lines that connect us to the events that dot our lives.

Day 109

Affirmation:

I act and speak from my loving heart.

I offer love.

I represent love.

I am loving in my thoughts toward others.

Along the path toward living consciously many become concerned with the ego and its influences.  We’re often guided to ask ourselves “Am I acting from my ego?”  It is a valid consideration but with so many different ideas of what ego actually is, how can anyone really know?  And even if we agree on the function of ego, repeatedly placing our focus on the Little Protector will keep us coming at ourselves from an unproductive place of criticism and judgment. It can be frustrating and deflating.  But it doesn’t have to be and it shouldn’t be.

Instead of asking “Am I responding from my ego?” or “Is this my ego talking?” we can ask ourselves, “Am I acting from love?” or “Is this my loving heart talking?”  We all know what is loving and what isn’t.  We all know if we’re reacting to something from love or not.  So let’s make it simple, let’s just shift the focus a bit, let’s make it about love.

Day 107

Affirmation:

I value my emotional energy.

I use my emotional energy wisely.

I keep my attention on what is deserving of my concern.

It’s easy to make mountains out of molehills or get excited about something undeserving of any concern.  Little things can become big things very quickly if we let them.  It can be very healthy and balanced to consider a few points before becoming worked up over something.  Asking ourselves, “Does this have a lasting and negative affect on my life or another’s?” and “Does this hurt me or another?”  can put things back into proper perspective quickly.   Long lines, unwashed dishes, and dented fenders rarely change anyone’s life or cause pain.  If the matter doesn’t seriously impact anyone’s life, and causes no one harm, then there is a pretty good chance it’s not worth any expended energy.

Day 106

Affirmation:

I am still.

I am present.

I am free of internal clutter.

I am still.

I am present.

I am free of internal congestion.

I am still.

I am present.

I am free.

As important as having simplicity in our personal spaces can be, transformative even, having it within ourselves is crucial. Simplifying one’s inner world is about finding stillness in the mind by eliminating the mental clutter, the extraneous thoughts that fill our waking lives with incessant chatter.  Meditation and yoga are helpful, losing oneself in a meditative act like painting or listening to music can also help quiet the mind.  Simplifying the inner world means pausing to be physically and mentally present in the moment.  It means physically leaving one location (like work) and taking our whole self (thoughts included) with us, not being mentally other than where our body is.  It means not living in yesterday nor worrying about tomorrow.  It means refusing to engage in the drama of others’ lives or allowing it to be part of ours. That may mean not tuning in to the news every day. It might mean choosing to watch television shows that promote well-being and inner peace instead of those that promote tension and discord. Simplifying the inner world means letting go of emotions and beliefs that don’t serve one’s life and well-being.  It means opening the closet of the heart and getting rid of what no longer fits, what never belonged to us in the first place, and what was given to us that we don’t want.  Simplifying internally means getting back to the basics of who we are and what we’re about.  It’s about finding that place within where love and hope and faith and happiness and peace have permanent residence.  It means embracing our feelings without judging ourselves for having them.  It means letting joy be joy and sorrow be sorrow.  Simplifying the inner world is about creating a quieter mind, an engaged sense of being, and a peaceful heart.

Day 98

Affirmation:

My dreams are as big and as infinite as my imagination.

I believe in my dreams and their fulfillment.

I let no one and no thing hinder my dream potential.

Why do we settle for dreaming small when dreaming big is just as possible?  Because we tend to minimize our own potential, we often minimize our dreams, hopes and ambitions.  There is no limit to human potential, only that which we ourselves place on it.  Men soar in the sky like birds because someone dared to dream that big dream.  Humans have navigated beyond the scope of our planet because someone dreamed that big dream.  Organs can be replaced, regenerated and even grown all because first someone dreamed those big dreams.  Every thought we have creates something so why not go for something grand? Don’t settle for dreaming small.  Dream BIG and bold and all the way and let no one tell you that you can’t.

Day 97

Affirmation:

There is no limit to the amount of love that I give to myself.

There is no limit to the amount of love that I am willing to receive.

I give myself compliments, kindness and consideration without limits.

I accept compliments, kindness and consideration without limits.

I give myself only positive and healthy emotional, verbal and physical treatment.

I accept only positive and healthy emotional, verbal and physical treatment from others.

No one can or will receive more than they are willing to give to themselves.   This is true whether we are talking about a positive offering or a negative one.   I call the point we will not receive beyond our allowing point.  We will accept  in measures equal to or less than what we give ourselves, but once what is offered exceeds our allowing point, we will stop accepting.  One can not accept more love from another than they give to themselves.  If the amount of love one is being offered exceeds their allowing point, they will become frightened or overwhelmed and probably sabotage the relationship.   In the same way, no one will accept more pain or abuse from another than they give to themselves.  If the amount of abuse being offered exceeds the allowing point, then one will usually walk away, but rarely before.  By paying attention and asking ourselves a few simple questions we can gain some insight into where our allowing points are set…

Do I accept compliments well?  Am I comfortable receiving gifts?  Am I only attracted to bad boy or girl types?  How much abuse or lack of consideration do I allow from others before saying enough is enough? Do I mistreat or abuse myself verbally, emotionally or physically?

By looking at how we receive or reject what others offer us, we gain insight into our own ability to both love and loathe ourselves.   Imagine what a world it would be if everyone had an allowing point for positive set at infinity, and for negative, set to zero!   We can dream…We can try!

Day 96

Affirmation:

I resolve to laugh.

I choose to engage in activities that make me laugh.

I will laugh more than I cry.

I see the lighter side of life.

There are times when laughter really is the best medicine.  It releases feel-good hormones, raises vibrations and can create an opening where a change in perspective to take place.   Taking things too seriously for too long can lead to all kinds of problems, both physically and emotionally.   And the truth is, people who take life too seriously aren’t a lot of fun to be around.  Every aspect of life needs balance and seriousness needs to be tempered with levity.   A great way to lift spirits or lighten a mood is to watch a funny movie or online video, read jokes, go to a comedy club, or watch a comedian on television.   To keep balance in our lives,  we can resolve to see the lighter side, and to engage in activities that produce laughter.

Day 95

Affirmation:

I am able to say, “I’m sorry.”

I leave my ego behind and admit when I am wrong.

I embrace humility.

It’s never easy to eat humble pie but there is spiritual integrity in its flavor.  Only the ego needs to always be right.  Only the ego can’t say “I was wrong.”   From the heart we can be honest and easily say, “I was wrong and I am sorry.”   From the heart we know that we are not less for our mistakes but more for owning them.

Day 92

Affirmation:

I am more than a body.

I am more than my thoughts.

I am more than my personality.

I am also an incarnated spark of the Divine.

We are so much more than we can ever see in a mirror. We are soul, spirit, and sparks of Divinity inside earthly vehicles.  Our inner selves needs as much attention as our outer selves.  Every day we must strive to nurture the entirety of our beings, including the invisible and mysterious.

Day 88

Affirmation:

I see life through the instrument of my heart.

I perceive existence with my sense of loving.

My eyes and ears may fail me, but my heart never will.

If intuition is the sixth sense, love is the seventh, and its instrument is the heart. With the heart we can see the world and its experiences through the eyes of the Divine.  With the heart we can see the pathway to forgiveness.  With the heart we can hear words without judgment or fear.  With the heart we can touch the lives of those who suffer or need.  From the heart we can speak words of appreciation, compassion and tolerance.  When we use our hearts to experience life through loving – just as we use our eyes to experience life through seeing and our hands to experience life through touching – the world and all in it are seen as having  higher purpose, divine mystery, and an inherent beauty.  Anytime life takes on a troubled hue, we can see it differently by looking with the heart.
