Day 204

Affirmation:

I refuse to be an armchair sage, filled with knowledge unused and unapplied.

I walk my talk, and practice what I preach.

I live outwardly as a reflection of my inner knowledge.

The journey toward inner peace and inner unity usually involves acquiring knowledge.  This may be knowledge of the self, knowledge of reality, or knowledge of purpose.  While knowledge is immeasurably valuable, it is the wisdom that is gained from the application of that knowledge that promotes the most growth.   To truly make progress along the path toward the Self, one must take what has been learned and apply it in the tangible reality.  Knowing how to be tie one’s shoes is not enough; the shoes must one day be tied.  Knowing how to live without fear is not enough; one must begin living without fear.  Knowing what it means to love  is not enough; one must  actually experience love.

Day 128

Affirmation:

I accept that sometimes I must let go in order to grow.

However difficult it can be, I respect loss as a part of expansion.

                      __________________________

Imagine you are driving from Los Angeles to New York.  To prepare for the trip you will probably want to clean out the car.  You’ll make sure the trunk and back seat area have plenty of room for your luggage and anything you might collect along the way.   But what if the car is crammed full of stuff before you ever leave L.A?   You won’t have much room for anything new you might discover on your journey.   Well the journey through life is a lot like that journey across the United States.  You have to know when you’re overloaded with what you don’t need anymore, and let it go, in order to collect new experiences.  I’m talking about things like attachments to the past-old wounds, regrets and blame-and present attachments that are unproductive or unhealthy.  Sometimes a dream needs to die in order to make way for a new one.  Sometimes a hope must be let go of in order to realize something better.  Sometimes a relationship must be left in order to know a healthier or more meaningful experience.  Very often the losses we need to experience in order to know growth are not by our choice, but are thrust upon us.  A loss, however it is disguised, and by whatever means it arrives, is a signal for growth.  It is the removal of something you’ve held on to, in order that you might experience something else.  Letting go and loss are rarely experienced easily, but when resisted, the difficulty is only intensified and prolonged.  Surrender to loss, and let go of what is no longer useful, and you create space in your experience for new, unimagined opportunities for expansion, joy, and well-being.

Day 67

Affirmation:

Love is not self-centered.

Love is not petty.

Love is not about taking.

Love is not about who is wrong.

Love is not about control.

Love is not about possession.

Love is not about the ego.

        _____________

Even if love was the glue that created the original bond, fear (and its related emotions) often squeeze love out, allowing the ego to take over the  relationship.   When that happens, control issues, possessiveness, and self-centeredness threaten to dominate the landscape.  Love is not about, “What’s in it for me.”  Love says, “What can I do for you.”  Love is never about taking;  it is about giving (which means receiving too).   Love doesn’t fight for control or power in a relationship; it empowers.  Love isn’t a struggle for rights; it’s the ultimate union (which knows the importance of collective bargaining).  Love is not a cage; it is without boundaries, promoting unlimited growth in its partners.   Love is never about the ego, but always about the heart.

Day 34

Affirmation:

I am grateful for every good thing in my life.

I am grateful for every challenge in my life.

I am grateful for every opportunity for growth I am given.

                                  ______________________

It’s easy enough to feel grateful for things like loving friends, a fulfilling job, and a warm place to sleep. Harder, is feeling grateful for a struggle or a challenging person yet these have always been my greatest teachers, offering me unsurpassed growth potential.  Today I intend to feel grateful for every struggle or challenge I face…. and the gift, not yet revealed, that lies within it.  I will remember that it is to the mire the lotus owes its beauty.
